Lubbock prepares roads for wintery mix

The Department of Transportation and the Department of Public safety are preparing the roads for a wintery mix headed towards Lubbock.

“Just ask yourself in the morning “Do I really need to drive in that?” said Lieutenant Bryan Witt, Department of Public Safety. “If the answer is no then you should probably stay home.”

Both of the departments are warning drivers about black ice, saying even if it looks clear to please drive slowly.

“Here in Lubbock we get a little bit of rain and it freezes,” Witt said. “Well if you add some snow on top of that then people don’t see it, and then you have people sliding all over the roads.”

Crews have been up and down 1-27 treating it with brine but officials say there still might be some bad spots.

“Especially under bridges and overpasses those are going to be the most icy because you don’t have that ground warmth, and anyone not being careful enough could be in a really bad situation,” said Witt.
