For many kids in the Hub City, it was their first day of school, but for one teacher, it was just another first day of a very long career.
“The first day is always a very special day because you’re so happy to see the kids when they come back,” said Dawn Campagna, a teacher at Williams Elementary School. “I feel like this school is our home, and I want to welcome them here.”
Campagna is a veteran teacher with more than 30 years of experience. Denise Neeb, principal of Williams Elementary School, says she is one of the most respected teachers on campus.
“She is an amazing teacher and is just so loved by everyone,” said Neeb. “I would call her the heart and soul of what goes on here.”
Through the years, Campagna has had the opportunity to mentor generations of families, and she called it one of the best parts of her job.
“It is so incredibly fulfilling,” said Campagna. “I know grandfathers, grandmothers, aunts and uncles, and that in itself is just so rewarding.”
Despite being able to retire years ago, Campagna insists on teaching and calls the first day of school one of her favorite days.
“I love teaching,” she said. “I have no intention of retiring in the near future because teaching is what keeps me young, and every day, my students make my heart grow each and every day.”
