Students from all over the district gathered at Irons Middle School for the Lubbock ISD spelling bee on Saturday morning.

After over ten rounds of competition, fourth grader Mahider Gebre won with the word, “disembark.”

“I was so happy, I didn’t think I could do it,” Gebre said.

Gebre said she has been competing since the first grade, and reads every day, so she can learn new words.

“My favorite part is when I spell the word correctly cause I don’t want to miss it,” Gebre said.

Gebre said she has gotten her little brother into spelling as well, and that they both share a love for the competition.

Gebre will move on to the regional spelling be taking place in the spring, and said she is starting practice right away.
