A mayoral proclamation declared November 28 Lubbock’s 2017 Day of Giving will be presented to more than 60 local nonprofits during a press conference and ribbon cutting ceremony. Lubbock will be participating in ‘Giving Tuesday‘ for the third year and the organizations hope to raise $275,000 by next Tuesday.

Lubbock-based nonprofit, Alström Angels, in partnership with the Community Foundation of West Texas, is coordinating the Giving Tuesday movement for the South Plains, according to the press release.

“Our organization, the Alström Angels, we watched the Giving Tuesday movement as it started to grow and become a world wide day. Then in 2014 we saw something different start to happen with the movement where cities were going in together. And instead of every organization doing their own individual Giving Tuesday campaign, the organizations came together,” says Casie Johnston, co-founder of Alström Angels

Johnston explained that the local movement, #GivingTuesdayLBK, inspires people to take collaborative action to improve the local community, give back to causes they celebrate and help create a better world.

United Supermarkets locations are partnering with these organizations to make it simple: All you have to do is add a cash donation to the end of your grocery bill.

“These same neighbors, these same friends and families that are out there raising money behind this mission are the families that are shopping at our stores. And so if our stores can be a channel towards that community impact, I can’t think of a better fit to bring that into our locations,” says Mary Myers, manager of communications for United Supermarkets.

Giving Tuesday, which is the Tuesday after Thanksgiving on November 28 this year, is an opportunity for the Lubbock community to think about, talk about and participate in the giving season, according to the press release.

“These people, or neighbors, step up whenever the call goes out. Whenever there is a need. West Texans are some of the most giving people in the world,” says Myers.
