On Thursday morning, the Lubbock chapter of the Muscular Dystrophy Association held its “MDA Lock-Up” fundraiser to raise funds and awareness for MD research.
Volunteers, or “jailbirds”, who registered beforehand for the event sat down and had to make calls to families and friends for donations. In order to break out of “jail,” they had to reach their individual goals that they set for themselves.
Each dollar raised through the MDA Lock-Up goes directly toward helping children and adults with Muscular Dystrophy, ALS and related diseases.
D.J. Perez, business development director of Lubbock MDA, shared that at the local level, over 115 children and adults are affected by MD, and that there are around 550 patients around the region.
Amanda Hodge, an ambassador for the local MDA chapter and and MD patient herself, says she enjoys events like this because it brings the community together for a cause so personal for her.
“Even though they’re not personally affected, it’s still – that they would reach out and take an hour out of their day to come and be ‘locked up’ here at the Roadhouse for someone they don’t even know. It just gives me hope in humanity you know?” said Hodge.
