Texas Tech will break ground on the Dustin R. Womble Basketball Practice Facility on January 25, 2019.

The new facility will be located across from the United Supermarkets Arena, in the Commuter West parking lot.

Due to the construction, Stacy Stockard with Texas Tech Parking Services, said 300 parking spots will be displaced, but they have a plan.

“We knew at some point this facility would probably have it’s ground breaking,” Stockard said. “And we decided to go ahead and adjust our sale rates back almost a year ago to allow for that, in case it did come up.”

Morgan Allen, a senior at Texas Tech, said she has not always had the best experience with parking services, due to past construction projects in the Commuter West lot.

“I don’t think it’s as bad as when they did the antenna, people couldn’t even get to half of the parking lot,” Allen said.

Stockard said they are currently working on a plan to more than compensate for the loss of space, and hope it is sometime in the near future.

As for now, Stockard said students with Commuter West parking passes can use some other lots, while they are looking for a solution.

“We still have availability in two of our other commuter locations: Raider Park Garage and then our Commuter Satellite lot,” Stockard said.
