Bruce Bessell and his son Nick worked together to open the mobile food truck Nick’s Shaved Ice.

“Any parent with a kid with a disability will tell you they’ve thought about what they are going to do when their child graduates,” Bruce said.

Bruce said he wanted Nick, who has Down syndrome, to have a summer job just like any other teenager.

“In the start of July, I saw how important and saw how proud he was to do this job. Parents of other kids have told me this job has made their kids joyful, too,” Bruce said.

Alongside Nick, Bruce has hired five other employees who all have special needs. He said when the shops open, each kid has their own unique tasks while he supervises.

“Instead of just Nick and me, let’s take some of these kids who have never had summer jobs and give them a job. We have six kids with special needs that work with us and so far it’s been good,” Bruce said.
