The City of Lubbock Health Department said they see between three and five new cases of HIV each month.
“In Lubbock in 2016, there were 39 cases. In the state of Texas, they diagnosed 4,450 new cases in 2016,” Katherine Wells, director of public health for the City of Lubbock, said.
Dennis Kinman, HIV agency program supervisor for Starcare Specialty Health Systems, said those cases do not include everyone who may have interacted with an HIV carrier.
“There is even more cases that go undiagnosed and unannounced that they may not know they are carrying HIV,” Kinman said.
The Health Department and other organizations are working together to help those diagnosed here in the Hub City.
