The 17th anniversary of the tragedy of Sept. 11 is upon us. In honor of the nearly 3,000 people killed on 9/11, Prosperity Bank paid tribute for the 16th year with the American Tribute Flag Field.

With the help of the Lubbock Fire and Police Departments, more than 1,000 flags will fly at Kastman Park.

“We’re really honored to be able to put this tribute out and represent the lives of the lost during 9/11, as well as support the first responders and military personnel,” says Makenzie Means, marketing specialist at Prosperity Bank. “We’re really thankful for the sacrifices that you and your family have made, we’re sorry for your loss, but we really appreciate the sacrifice.”

These flags, shaped in two large rectangles that represent the Twin Towers, are flying not only in honor of the victims of 9/11, but also the first responders, military members and their families.

“Not only do we need to think about the military people who fought for our country and sacrificed, we also need to think about our first responders because whenever anything like 9/11 or even tornadoes, or floods, or anything like that, they’re the ones that rush into the event when everyone else is running away, so let’s keep them in our thoughts, too,” said Lubbock resident Roy Teeters.

“I have thoughts for the families, I  think this time of year is a good time to for us just to pause and put those families in our prayers and generally think about all the people that sacrificed for this country over the years … it’s just a good time to reflect on that and say some prayers,” Teeters said.

The flags will continue to fly at Kastman Park until Sept. 17.
