This week TxDOT’s Lubbock District Office is continuing their safety improvements along Avenue Q between 38th and 50th streets by installing a new line of street lights.

The lighting phase is just part of an even bigger project to bring improvements to Avenue Q all the way from I-27 to 16th Street. The project comes after the TxDOT Lubbock office qualified for a $1.2 million grant within the Highway Safety Improvement Program to bring changes to the roadway after a high number of reported accidents involving pedestrians and vehicles.

“One of the criteria is the amount of crashes that a corridor or roadway has. So unfortunately, that’s why this stretch of roadway qualified for this lighting program because this is a high pedestrian area,” said Ascencio. “We’ve had several crashes that involve vehicles and pedestrians, so hopefully by making these improvements to the lighting we can also improve those statistics on this stretch of roadway.”

Ascencio says the overall safety improvement project is expected to wrap up in the spring.

Until then, as the project continues, drivers can anticipate various lane closures along Avenue Q, and they are asked to stay alert when driving through construction zones.
