The Salvation Army of Lubbock kicked off its Red Kettle campaign Friday. It is the nonprofit’s 90th year raising money for the local community, but for one man, it was his first day on the job.
“I feel like a kid on the first day of school right now, I’m so nervous,” said Ricky Scott.
He was prepared to spend the next nine hours standing outside for a good cause. He rings the bell and wishes happy holidays to those passing by, hoping they will spare some change to help the local homeless.
“I’m prepared to stay out here till the hands of the clock fall off,” said Scott. “Standing is a small price to pay for what we can do here today.”
Whether it’s five cents or $20, every little bit helps and may even come with a hug. The Salvation Army hopes to raise more than $250,000 and say they have a long way to go.
“It’s time for everyone to come on out and help us,” said Scott. “It touches everyone in this community and in the spirit of the holidays is the right thing to do.”
