In the aftermath of Hurricane Harvey, “Texas Strong” is being proven throughout the state with each donation given to the survivors. However, scam artists are using this devastation to pull on the heart strings on others and capitalize on their funding.
“Unfortunately that’s part of these type of disasters, people take advantage of the opportunity and feed on other people’s emotions and good intent that they have,” Texas Tech University Internal Technology Managing Director Scott Hall said.
Different organizations in the South Plains have already raised millions of dollars in donations by water, food, gasoline, and shelter. However, several organizations told EverythingLubbock.com that they are primarily asking for financial help so the money can be directed wherever the need may be.
Hall said before you donate anything, do your homework and research the organization first.
“Our first concern is that the source of that request is not legitimate,” Hall said. “It could be malicious intent and that they’re out for infecting someones’ computer, stealing identity or taking their money for donation.”
“When looking at an email or maybe social media post make sure it’s a legitimate message,” Hall added. “Be cautious of organizations that have sprung up overnight.”
