While school is still months away, one school district is using the summer to ensure its students will be safe when they return.

Lubbock-Cooper Independent School District sent several of its administrators to Austin to learn what they can do to stop gun violence.

“You can never be fully prepared. I mean every school administrator who has been in the position has said whatever training you’ve gone to, there’s always something that you didn’t think of,” said Keith Bryant, superintendent of Lubbock-Cooper ISD

The school district already has multiple programs in place to stop gun violence, including officers patrolling campus, mentorship programs and watching out for behavioral problems. However this year, Bryant said they want to place even more emphasis on them.

“We have to make sure that we engage with those students every day, and making sure that we are watching their behavior,” said Bryant. “We can’t turn a blind eye to when a kid is really struggling.”

While, Lubbock-Cooper school district is still waiting for the return of its students, Bryant said they are more than ready to make sure every student is safe.

“We can’t wait,” said Bryant. “It’s only June 29, but we are already ready for kids tomorrow.”
