BASF is hoping to advance its dealings in the agri-solution arena and seed industry, and with Lubbock being one of the nation’s premiere hubs of the cotton industry, the existing Bayer programs were extremely desirable to BASF.
“We’re close to the grower community and Texas Tech,” Monty Christian, global head of cotton seeds and traits, said. “We have several research initiatives with the agriculture school, and as BASF looked at buying this asset, they said, ‘Wow, this makes a lot of sense.'”
Christian said BASF is one of four companies globally investing in research in the agri-solution area, and they are only hoping to build off what has already been created.
“The discussions are all about discovering new technologies and new solutions for our growers,” Christian said. “We want healthy food, a stable food and fiber supply. I see having a key agricultural business in the Lubbock area that was here before and is here now looking to developing new things.”
