LUBBOCK, Texas — Snakes are out of hibernation, and are slithering across the South Plains.
According to wildlife experts, these snakes will stay out of the way for the most part, but there are a few you need to be aware of.
“Most of what we are seeing are rattlesnakes,” said Sam Harryman, wildlife biologist. “They have been out in pastures, ranch properties, pretty much anywhere that you can think of while still trying to hide.”
Rattlesnakes, along with bull snakes, and several different varieties live along the South Plains. Many of them do not attack humans, and animal control officers say these snakes are essential to daily life.
“These snakes take care of a lot of pests such as rodents, ticks, and other animals,” said Jace Morris, Animal Control. “Likewise the snakes are then food for some of our predators like hawks, so its important to keep this cycle going.”
