A local veteran couple have taken stopping burglaries into their own hands after a series of car break-ins in their south Lubbock neighborhood.

“When I get up in the middle of the night and check my cameras, I don’t look to see how old they are. I am grabbing my sidearm,” Omar Hernandez said.

Hernandez said he and his wife set up several cameras around their home and have caught nearly eight thieves in the act.

“We’ve noticed a bunch of kids, ranging 12 to 18, coming through the neighborhood and opening car doors,” Hernandez said.

The Army veteran said both he and his wife have their License to Carry. When their system alerts that someone is outside, Hernandez said they go out armed and hold the burglars at gunpoint until police arrive.

Recently, he said they have noticed an uptick in young kids and teenagers lurking late at night.

“We hold them here. We would rather have them here with me and my wife rather than someone else who is not experienced with guns,” Hernandez said.

Hernandez started a Facebook page that people can add that allows them to see crimes all over Lubbock.
