The South Plains Food Bank is bringing its Sharing for the Summer event to local locations near you. The event entails paying $5 worth of food, which will be given away to those in need.
“The Summer of Sharing Food drive over the past nine years has raised over 1 million pounds of food, we’ve raised $200,000 to help us get that food in and distribute it,” said David Weaver, CEO and director of South Plains Food Bank.
That bag of food can go on and feed a family of four for up to a week. It is just one of the many ways South Plains Food Bank tries to give back to its community. Weaver said it is one of the best aspects of his job.
“These are people who used to go to school with my children, people I grew up with, but then you realize that we serve 58,000 people per year but it’s 58,000 unique and individual stories,” he said.
While he doesn’t expect anything in return, he often sees people who were once part of the program come back and carry it forward.
“There was one woman who was there, and she looked me up and she said, ‘You know, I’m here today because a couple of years ago you helped me. The food bank was there when I needed you and I want to give back to you,'” said Weaver. “And that’s the kind of giving that optimizes the spirit that we have here.”
The program comes to an end on June 25, but until then, you can make a donation at several grocery stores including Food King and Lowe’s.
