Christmas is only a few weeks away, and most people have a long to do list before the holidays arrive, including the South Plains Food Bank. They have 3,500 Christmas food boxes to package before Christmas arrives and need help from the community to get it done on time.
The Christmas boxes will be distributed those who qualify on Dec. 16 and throughout the following week leading up to the Christmas holiday. To see if you qualify for a Christmas box, you can call 211 and go through the qualification process to get a voucher.
The Christmas boxes include canned goods, frozen foods, fresh produce and either a holiday turkey or ham. The CEO of the South Plains Food Bank, David Weaver, said because of late arrival on some of the items they are behind schedule putting the boxes together, but volunteering ones time is worth the time.
“When we start distributing food to those families on Saturday, it is the most wonderful time because you get to see the families that you are helping and see the look on their faces,” Weaver said. “It just gives you a really warm feeling to know that you are making a difference in their lives. We hear so often that people would not have Christmas and family time they do if they did not have the food that is provided through these Christmas boxes.
The food bank said during the holidays they really need food, funds and time donated from volunteers in the community. Volunteering is easy, and if anyone would like to volunteer or donate they can sign up or donate at www.spfb.org.
