The South Plains Wildlife Rehab Center is looking for donations with their baby season just getting started.

The Executive Director, Gail Barnes, said the cost of their supplies double during this time.

“Our expenses are more because we use the laundry and we use the incubators,” Barnes said. “We don’t receive any funding from our regulatory agencies.”

Barnes said you’ll most likely see baby squirrels and bunnies, but they’re not meant to be kept as pets. In fact, you have to make sure not to take the baby from it’s nest.

“Put the baby bunnies back. Leave them where they are. Put grass or hay on top of them. You can get flour or corn starch and draw a circle the babies,” Barnes said.

But, she said there are some exceptions.

“If you find a baby squirrel on the ground and it doesn’t have any fur, it’s been there and the mother has not come,” Barnes said. “It’s still chilly and we don’t want them to get hypothermic. You probably need to go ahead and pick them up and bring them into us.”

Over the next few months, she said they’ll need things like formula, paper towels, and bird seeds.

“Everything that comes to the wildlife center in the form of money goes to you know to operate the center,” Barnes said.

If you want to donate to the center, they have a 24-hour drop-off center at 3308 95th St. You can also call the center at (806) 799-2142.
