Special education students from the Lubbock area spent Thursday morning job shadowing more than 17 different companies.

United We Work provides students with job shadowing, job skills, and mock interviews in an effort to get them in the workforce.

“It’s just interesting to see how these kids light up when they get out of the classroom, and into a job they like,” said Summer Gattis, a Transition Coordinator.

According to school officials, they hope today will normalize special education students in the workforce, showing the world they all have a lot more to offer than people realize.

“It doesn’t matter if you have ADHD or Down’s Syndrome, as long as you are able and willing to work you should be able to get a job,” said Johnny Wier, a student who wants to become a police officer.

Another transition fair will be open in March to show families about local agencies and services to help their children with life after high school.
