On Thursday, Keller Williams realty groups around the country closed their doors for the day to serve their communities. Lubbock offices chose St. Benedict’s Chapel to devote their day of service to.

It’s part of the company’s annual RED day. Each year on the second Thursday of May, realtors and their families pick an organization or agency in their community to spend the day volunteering at. For volunteers Thursday morning, that meant spending the day at St. Benedicts, which aims at serving Lubbock’s homeless, working poor and food insecure. The chapel works alongside other local churches to help those in need.

“Saint Benedict’s has been a community effort from the beginning, so it’s awesome to have an organization like Keller Williams to be here today to help us out. It’s just really cool,” said Ivan Ponce Deleon, the chapel’s spiritual director.

Volunteers spent the morning putting up new fencing, renovating the garage, planting flowers, painting inside the chapel and more.

Larissa Cable, a realtor with Keller Williams and volunteer at the chapel, says she enjoys getting to see two communities she cares for come together.

“I see both worlds. I volunteer here with my family and our church, I petitioned that Saint Benedict’s be the project for us. For me, it’s a great honor, and I feel so blessed that we’re the ones to come and do the project,” Cable said. “It’s a wonderful place to be able to get involved and help support, whether you’re wanting to help serve a meal or even just make a donation in ways that they need, because there’s always things that they need.”

Later that evening, volunteers will stay on site to eat with fellow community members who come to the chapel for their nightly dinner.

The chapel always welcomes help from the community, whether it is monetary or through hands-on volunteering. For more information on how to get involved, visit their site here
