The Sudan Police Department is looking for someone who is picking up and moving stop signs around town. They said it’s more dangerous than these people realize.
“Things have been in the same spot, if something changes automatically. It can cause a lot of damage,” said Sudan’s Police Chief, Everest Williams, “It is illegal. That’s city property. They’re damaging city property.”
Williams said this prank puts people in danger.
“People are accustomed to having a stop sign there. Someone that is not accustomed to having a stop sign naturally wouldn’t stop because there is no stop sign being displayed and will run right out to traffic and will not yield to a person who doesn’t normally have a stop sign that won’t stop,” said Williams.
He noticed the trend on Sunday. He said he thought it was an accident, but then a city employee brought another misplaced stop sign to his attention.
“It was put on the side of a church. They placed it on the North end of a church,” Williams said.
So far, they don’t know who’s the person or group of people doing this in their town, but the police department wants them to be aware they can be charged with criminal mischief.
If someone gets hurt or loses their life because of it, the stop sign bandit or bandits could face much more serious charges.
“Playing these types of pranks isn’t really good for the consequences they can face in the future,” said Williams.
They’ve been able to replace the stop signs, but they just don’t want this to happen again. If you have any information that can help police you can contact them on their Facebook here.
