On Monday, June 26 the South Plains Food Bank will wrap up its eighth annual “Summer of Sharing” food drive, which aims to help families in need across the area get nutritious meals throughout the summer months.

The food drive kicked off Memorial Day with the Conquer Hunger Run at Mackenzie Park. Since then, the South Plains Food bank, community members and local partners have been working hard through the month of June to reach their goal of 135,000 pounds of food, and $35,000 to help area families in need.

Macy Lopez, Digital Marketing and Communications Manager for the food bank, says she is especially thankful for the all the new local partners who decided to join in on the food bank’s mission, which include (but are not limited to): Little Gym, Grace Clinic, Alamo Drafthouse, Communities in Schools as well as State Representative Dustin Burrows.

“We did see a lot more participants sign up so that was really rewarding that we got the word out there, and more partners participating this time around, so we actually received a lot more donations this year as well,” said Lopez.

The drive officially ends at the wrap up party at the Food King located off of 82nd and Slide on Monday night. It begins at 5:30 p.m. and will run through 7:30 p.m.

Although the food drive ends on Monday, hunger remains a ongoing issue across the South Plains throughout the year. To donate to or participate in the food bank’s year-long campaign, Feed Our Kids, Fuel Our Future, visit their website here for more information.
