As Hurricane Irma creeps towards the Sunshine State, Lubbock District Game Wardens left the South Plains to report to the Florida area.
“Florida sent over 120 game wardens to help us in East Texas and so we have the equipment, we might be able to return the favor sooner than later,” Lubbock District Texas game Warden Aaron Sims said.
Along with other West Texas Game Wardens, Sims just returned from a ten day mission along the Gulf Coast to help with the aftermath of Hurricane Harvey.

After decontaminating their uniforms and equipments from the flooding conditions, a unit from Lubbock will team up with other Texas Game Wardens to drive to the Pensacola area Friday morning.
“It’s going to be the same issues maybe this one won’t hang around as long as Harvey did,” Sims said. “The problem with Harvey is that it just sat and spun and wouldn’t leave and it would’ve been much better if it had hit and went straight through and moved on and that was big issue for Harvey. With Florida there are a lot of low lying areas.”
Sims said 11, 000 Texans were saved from high water situations by game wardens across the state. He added their main objective in Florida will be search and rescue missions, and will be taking the same flat-bottom and air boats with other equipment.
