A 19-year-old Texas Tech student was shocked when he learned he received a $90,000 scholarship.
John Welch earned the scholarship from Together We Rise, which offers financial support to young adults transitioning out of the foster care system.
Welch is a former resident of Sondra’s Song, which also helps young adults during this transition.
Only 12 students nationwide received the award this year. Welch has a 3.6 GPA and completed an essay and two interviews to be considered.
The scholarship will be spread over five years.
Welch said the scholarship reminded him that although he has been through a lot, he is still standing.
