The City of Lubbock provides a regular trash program pickup for the city, but that doesn’t include recycling.
“The City of Lubbock has a drop-off system, which is more feasible to have. It’s costly to have curbside drop-off for recycling,” Penny Morin, the City of Lubbock solid waste collection manager, said.
The city does provide drop-off services for plastic, cardboard and tin, but not glass products. The city said its glass machine broke several years ago, and it is too costly to fix.
“It’s expensive to run, it’s expensive to maintain and expensive to operate,” Morin said.
Evan Reid, a student at Texas Tech, decided to help.
“We realized there wasn’t the best means for recycling here in Lubbock compared to other cities,” Reid said.
Reid and his roommate have created a curbside pickup program for recycling. They pick up recyclable items twice a month from their clients’ doorsteps.
“One of the biggest challenges is people who want to recycle but don’t have the time and that’s where we come in,” Reid said. “It saves them a bit of time, and we want to help give back and make the environment is cleaner.”
