LUBBOCK, Texas — Texas Tech University is using severe weather as an opportunity to pioneer new research into the formation of tornado.
According to the researchers, the research will be conducted for the next two years, and will isolate different factors that could be the root cause of a tornado.
“We have never done research like this before,” said Christopher Weiss, Professor of Atmospheric Science at Texas Tech University. “For the first time we are going to marry our measurements with the latest technology for the best possible outcomes.”
Weiss said students and faculty will team up into small groups for storm chasing, take the sky’s temperature, and compare this information to other storms in the area.
“This will help us improve our warnings, especially for tornadoes and give us a better lead time,” said Mark Conder, Operations Officer for National Weather Service. “We won’t give out so many false alarms, having this information could really make a difference for us.”
Professor Weiss said they are hoping to get some of the results by fall this year.
