The Texas Water Development Board is announcing details to the state’s first ever flood plan. State lawmakers voted to give the board $600,000 to go toward the plan.
Chairman Bech Bruun with the Texas Water Development Board said this new plan will allow regions to work together in order to better prevent flooding.
“I think this plan will be eye opening and show us that across the state there are a number of flood projects that need to be built, and it’s going to be expensive to do so,” Bruun said. “That is going to lead to a conversation, can the state pay for it and will they be able to help?”
Bruun said the board will be interacting with different communities across the state to acquire feedback in order to create an effective plan. He also said the idea for the plan was in part sparked by Senator Charles Perry at a hearing last year.
“He was ultimately what led us to asking the legislature to fund it this last session which they have,” Bruun said.
The board anticipates that this project could potentially take billions to implement, they hope to have it finished by 2019.
