Businesses aren’t the only thing taking a hit since several Texas Tech students left for the summer. Uber and Lyft drivers are also taking a hit over summer.

“I wanna say 80% rely on college student’s business and same with Uber and Lyft drivers as well. I spoke with a student this morning and he said they can feel it too. They’re the only ones walking around, it’s like a ghost town,” Joyce Lippold, a driver for Uber and Lyft said.

Lippold said several drivers are just part time but she warns those who drive full time should be cautious.

“Don’t depend on it, don’t make this your full time job. I wouldn’t say that in bigger cities but for Lubbock since it is a little bit smaller. You’re not going to make a living off of it with students being out,” Lippold said.

Summer school for Tech start in June and Lippold said that brings hope to drivers around town.

“We just have to hope with summer school starting soon it will pick up a little more,” Lippold said.
