When Harvey hit south Texas, it ruined not only homes, and businesses, but it also left several people without work, either temporarily or indefinitely. To help those impacted by this, Workforce Solutions of the South Plains has sent a crew and mobile unit to southeast Texas to volunteer with unemployment assistance efforts.

On Monday morning, a crew with Workforce Solutions and their mobile computer lab hit the road for Deweyville, a small town hit hard by flooding near the Texas and Louisiana border. They will be in the region for at least two weeks, but will be staying as long as they are needed.

Martin Aguirre, Chief Executive Officer of Workforce Solutions of the South Plains, explained that there are 28 Workforce Solutions boards across the state who were all put on notice that if they had a mobile unit capable of traveling to and assisting Harvey flood victims, that they might be asked to make the trip.

The request was volunteer-based, but Aguirre said he knew the Lubbock station had to respond.

“No one in Texas said they wouldn’t do it,” shared Aguirre. “We want them to know that Workforce Solutions is there to help them. Workforce Solutions is a statewide brand, and the South Plains is just specific to us, but we’re going to go help Workforce Solutions deep east Texas which is the part of area, we’ll be taking care of an area sort of south of Lufkin, all the way to the coast and over to the Louisiana border.”

The mobile unit is completely run off of WiFi, and stocked with computers and other resources to volunteer with online unemployment assistance and disaster relief programs in the area.
