A group of 25 fellows from sixteen different African countries are in Lubbock as part of the six week Mandela Washington Fellow ship, a program created by former president Obama.
The fellows consist of Lawyers, Doctors, Teachers and even Agriculture Workers. They have made stops at The South Plains Food Bank, The Lubbock Police Station, and today the Parkway Community Center.
A French teacher from Ghana, Linat Osuman said she has thoroughly enjoyed her time in Lubbock so far, and there is so much she wants to take back for her children.
“For me it’s awesome being here and I hope when I get back I can share with my people what I have learned in the U.S. and what I think is best for them,” Osuman said.
While they are learning about American systems they are also learning more about each others countries. Attorney near Cape Town, Ilza Semorne Le Minnie said she has already been inspired by the South Plains Food Bank. She also plans to start South Africa’s first chapter of girl scouts.
“That’s not something we have back home so I contacted the head office and got some information from them so I’m going to start the first chapter when I get back,”
