A film of the life and legacy of renowned pioneering cardiovascular surgeon, Dr. Michael E. DeBakey of Houston, documenting his vast contributions to medicine, will be aired nationally on PBS and can be seen locally at 9 p.m. March 23 on KTTZ channel 5.
The film was produced by Dr. Tony Herring, a pediatric orthopedic surgeon and perennial chief of staff at Texas Scottish Rite Hospital for Children in Dallas, who went to medical school at Baylor College of Medicine, Houston, when DeBakey was chief of surgery as well as chancellor of the college.
Covenant Health has had a long standing relationship with DeBakey, having established the Covenant Heart Institute/Dr. Michael E. DeBakey Distinguished Lectureship Series with DeBakey himself as the inaugural speaker in 2004. This annual event, now in its 13th year, brings to Covenant and Lubbock some of the most prestigious physicians and surgeons in the world, to offer the people in West Texas cutting-edge information in the fields of cardiology and cardiovascular surgery.
Included in the film are appearances of many of the physicians who have come to Covenant as distinguished lecturers, as well as two of Covenant’s surgical staff, Dr. Don Bricker and Dr. Bob Salem, both of whom received their surgical training under Dr. DeBakey.
