The Texas Department of Transportation presented the Lamesa Municipal Airport with the 2017 Airport of the Year award.
This award-winning airport is busy with various activities, including: flight training, corporate activity, and recreational flying operations. Among the airport’s most important activities, aerial applicators utilize the airport to provide critical support to agri-businesses located within the region. The airport also supports area correctional facilities, law enforcement, and rangeland firefighting services.
Recently, the airport was awarded a grant to fund installation of an Automated Weather Observing System, which was commissioned in 2016.
Airport staff also teamed up with a local foundation to fund and construct a new 1,900 square-foot terminal building, which opened in January 2016. The new terminal is fully equipped with a flight briefing room, an airport manager’s office, and a visitor’s waiting room. There is also an attached two-car garage, used to store the airport courtesy vehicle and other airport equipment.
Future plans include partnering with the state to fund design for pavement rehabilitation of all the facility’s pavements this summer, with construction planned for next summer.
A recent visitor to the airport had this to say: “In addition to having one of the best prices for fuel, they now have a brand new modern building with all the creature comforts – coffee bar, conference table, nice restrooms and a flight planning room make this a great stop in the middle of west Texas 24 hours a day. I’m impressed.”
The award was presented this week at the 35th Annual Texas Aviation Conference.
