During their regularly scheduled meeting on Thursday, Feb. 18, the Lubbock-Cooper ISD Board of Trustees unanimously approved a $208.2 million bond proposal and called for an election in May. Residents living within Lubbock-Cooper ISD’s boundaries will be able to vote on the bond May 7.

Lubbock-Cooper ISD is growing at an average annual rate of 8.1 percent. District enrollment has increased by 515 students in the past year alone. The proposal, which includes two new elementary school campuses, a third middle school campus, and expansions on several existing campuses, addresses district-wide growth and accommodates projected student enrollment increases for the foreseeable future.

“Lubbock-Cooper ISD is the third fastest-growing school district in the state of Texas,” said LCISD Superintendent Keith Bryant. “This is a great problem to have – families want to move into our district, they want their children to receive a Lubbock-Cooper education because they believe in our vision and they trust us to exceed expectations. This means, however, that we are charged with analyzing our current facilities, adding and revamping where necessary, and ensuring that we are able to accommodate this unprecedented growth well into the future.”

Also included in the proposal are district-wide renovations and upgrades such as traffic improvements on multiple campuses, renovations at South Elementary and Lubbock-Cooper Middle School, and roofing and lighting replacements, and technology improvements on each LCISD campus.

The proposed bond package would not require an increase in the tax rate.

“As a Board, we have an obligation to the Lubbock-Cooper community to lead the district responsibly, attentively and proactively,” said LCISD Board of Trustees President Dave Gilles. “We do not take our duty lightly, and we have spent a great deal of time assessing the needs of our district and developing a strategy that best suits our community. This bond package addresses not only our current need to accommodate increasing student enrollment, but also projected future growth. Most importantly, we believe this will allow us to best serve the students of Lubbock-Cooper ISD, and that’s why we’re here.”

Lubbock-Cooper ISD is a 5A school district with an enrollment of 5,785 students. The district is currently home to seven campuses.
