Lubbock Christian University welcomed the Special Olympics Texas athletes from across the South Plains to show off their soccer skills in the competition on Friday.
“They love it…if you ask them. They are just excited to be out here with their teammates,” said Ashley Pena, the Area Director for Special Olympics Texas.
There were a total of five local soccer teams comprised of more than 60 athletes who participated in team competitions, five-aside and seven-aside soccer.
Members of the LCU men and women’s soccer teams were on site to volunteer and help keep score throughout the day.
“I’m just hoping to see some awesome competitors come out here and do what they love and to just enjoy today and see god’s hand at work,” said Katie Pullano sophomore defender.
Participating teams, like the Oreo Blast Raiders, have been training for over eight weeks. Teams compromised of athletes 12-years and older will qualify for the state competition- summer games which will take place May 25-27 at UT-Arlington.
