Lea County officials have begun the process to fill the position of sheriff following the death of Steve Ackerman.
Sheriff Ackerman was killed in a traffic accident in Torrance County while heading to Santa Fe back on January 17.
Lea County has opened the position up to applicants and plan to make a selection to serve the remainder of Ackerman’s term.
Applicants will need to submit applications, a cover letter and a resume to the Lea County Human Resources Department, 110 N. Main, Lovington, N.M.
Applications, according to county officials, will be due by Feb. 2.
On Feb. 6, applicants will meet with the Lea County Commission to present themselves and explain why they should be selected to fill the position, according to county officials.
After presentations are finished, the Lea County Commission can either appoint a candidate or reissue the announcement for new applicants, information regarding the process reads.
