Leave the Porch Light on This Weekend

Several city leaders and veterans group ask the public to leave the porch light on this weekend.

Turn on the Porch Light is an initiative supported by the Veterans of Foreign Wars, the Military Order of the Purple Heart and Remember our Heroes.

The goal is for Lubbock residents to leave their porch light on from sunset on Saturday, September 10th through sunrise Monday, September 12th.

“I believe there are more things in this country that unite us than divide us,” Dave Lewis said. “And this is a great way for us to remember and get behind all of those people.”

The initiative is usually celebrated on Veteran’s Day, but was moved to Monday, Patriot’s Day, in honor of the 15th anniversary of the September 11th terror attacks.

“On the darkest day of American history in this generation,” Danny Koch said. “We need to turn the porch light on and let it radiate light and let it be a shield for our first responders and our military, in our small way of expressing appreciation.”

Representatives from the organizations met with Senator Charles Perry on Friday afternoon. They were presented with a proclamation from the state senate in support of their efforts to honor and support military members and first responders, past and present.
