Trilogy Cellars has won Best of Class in the Malbec wine category at the recent San Francisco Chronicle Wine Competition with Trilogy Cellars 2015 Malbec.

The San Francisco Chronicle Wine Competition, hailed as the largest competition of American wines in the world, was held on January 13, at Cloverdale Citrus Fairgrounds in Sonoma County, CA.  Over 7,000 wines from 28 different states were judged by an expert panel of judges.  The wines were divided by varietal and several categories and subcategories were developed, and the panel rated entries as Bronze, Silver, Gold or Double Gold and Best in Class which is the clear category winner amongst the vintages awarded Double Gold medals.  Trilogy Cellars was awarded Best of Class above seven other Double Gold winners in the Malbec: $25 and above category.

When asked what this means for the Texas wine industry, Steve Newsom responded “We honestly respect what those who have come before us have done for the industry.  We are getting to enjoy the rewards of using the knowledge that pioneers like Neal Newsom and Bobby Cox taught us. Going forward with so many Texas wineries winning so many medals, and Best of Class awards, we truly believe the industry is poised to make a permanent splash across the country as a legitimate producer of some of the best wines in country and world.”  For Texas to continue to produce quality wines, like the Trilogy Cellars Reserve Malbec, partner Chace Hill said “Consistency. That is the bottom line. Working hard and battling mother nature and consistently producing quality fruit is the key. We can’t be hit and miss if we want respect on the grander scale.”

“For me, it’s extremely special to win this kind of award. We’re competing against wines from California, Washing, Oregon – and it’s awesome to be recognized for the quality grapes we are producing right here in Hockley County.” said partner, Rowdy Bolen.

Trilogy Cellars was founded by Steve and Cindy Newsom of Sundown, Chace and Elizabeth Hill of Lubbock and Rowdy and Tameisha Bolen of Smyer.   All three families grow grapes in Hockley County.  The 2015 Malbec wine is the first wine that includes grapes from all three family vineyards and the wine that “started it all.”

“ Words can’t describe what this means.” said Newsom.  “ To have done this with the people I did this with, not only my close friends Rowdy Bolen and Chace Hill but their wives Tameisha Bolen and Elizabeth Hill, and my wife Cindy and my children Raenee (rainy) and Keegan Newsom being part of the Trilogy story; is just beyond words. Also, the fact that our first truly incredible accolade came from a wine that has grapes from all three family vineyards is an incredibly emotional win in and of itself. I am proud to call the families I am involved with Trilogy my friends and look forward to many more awards, but more than that, many more good times.”

Other wines submitted to the competition by Trilogy Cellars included:

  • Intersection – All Other Red Blends up to $24.99 – Silver
  • Relentless – Red Bordeaux $35-44.99 – Silver
  • Merlot – Merlot $27-30.99  – Bronze
  • Pinot Grigio – Pinot Grigio: $10-19.99 – Bronze
