Lather Lewis, 34, of Lubbock was found guilty Friday of aggravated assault. He was accused of beating Antonio Gonzales, 57, in April of 2015 at the Hitching Post, 2002 East Broadway. Gonzalez later died from those injuries.
Another man, Richard Segura, was a witness.
He told police that he and Lewis were leaving the Hitching Post at about 1:30 in the morning when someone approached and punched Gonzales in the face. The beating went on, and Segura was also hit.
Court records said the owner of the Hitching Post saw the suspect and recognized him as Lewis. The club owner called 911 during the assault.
Lewis will be sentenced at a later date – May 10.
His jail booking sheet indicated the charge was a second-degree felony. Normally, the penalty range would be between two and 20 years in prison. However, because of his previous criminal record, we were told the punishment could be up to 99 years.
