Lubbock ISD Board of Trustees was granted a Tax Ratification Election to ask voters to give them permission to modify their taxes.
There are over five million dollars of state funding in Austin that are eligible to claim. LISD needs the community to vote in favor of shifting debt taxes into other services, like maintenance and operations, to make room for that state funding.
LISD said this modification will not change tax rates for residents, but shift the taxes into different departments.
“This shift of two pennies from one side of the tax rate to the other is good business,” LISD Superintendent Berhl Robertson, Ph.D, said. “It will allow us to pay cash for priority capital projects and instructional technology, like Chrome and iPads, rather than financing those things over time.”
The Board of Trustees said the twenty-first century classroom is heading to a more technology-based teaching method and this will help supply the demand for that need. It will also go to school expansion, the district said.
The election date is set for August 30, 2016.
