As part of the Lubbock ISD Summer Reading Challenge activities, students at Honey Elementary are building spaceships from recycled materials to tie into this year’s theme of Book Wars: The Reader Awakens.
On Tuesday, July 12, the students will be constructing the spaceships from recyclable materials brought from home in addition to the items provided by the campus librarian. The library will open from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. with the highest attendance typically occurring around 11 a.m. Honey Elementary is located at 3615 86th St.
Elementary school libraries (with the exception of Bayless and Wheelock) are open each Tuesday from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. with a story time at 11 a.m. Several middle and high school libraries are also open this summer on Tuesdays from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. The summer library schedules will conclude on Tuesday, August 2. Complete details can be found on the Lubbock ISD website.
Access to books over the summer months is one of the best approaches to prevent summer reading loss in students. Summer reading loss refers to the decline in a child’s reading development that can occur during summer vacation when children are away from the classroom. The Summer Reading Challenge is Lubbock ISD’s effort to encourage reading during the summer months.
