In the season of giving, Lubbock ISD Special Education Department wanted to show appreciation to the Durham bus drivers with a holiday meal Wednesday afternoon.
“They provide our students accommodations and they ensure our students get to school and back to home safely,” LISD Special Education Executive Director Kami Finger said. “So we thought it’s about time we stop and serve them.”
Local Durham bus drivers serve 437 LISD special education students throughout the year.
“Bus drivers are not always recognized in their jobs and their jobs are hard,” Finger said. “They are out in the cold. They face very challenging situations.”
“It takes a special person,” Durham Bus Driver Dorothy Richburg said. “You have this feeling, you can feel it. They are special these drivers, my comrades but they are special people.”
“They really care,” Durham Bus Driver Crystal West said. “Not only are we doing our jobs but they care about what we do and that’s a blessing. To me, that’s something special.”
“Someone acknowledges finally what we do because we do a lot,” Durham Bus Driver Laura Lovato said.
The meal was provided by the LISD Special Education staff with the help of United Super Market.
