A salesman at Accessory Depot explained how to make sure your trailer hitch is safely and properly attached.
Bradley Thompson with Accessory Depot said they are willing to check anyone’s trailer hitch to make sure everything is good to go.
He also said before anyone hauls anything, they should do a check of the set up.
“You need to do a walk around check, anyway to make sure everything you are attaching to the trailer and the vehicle are secure,” Thompson said.
Thursday, Makenzy Stanton also shared her story about when she was driving and a hitch came loose from another car.
Stanton said this was in 2014, and she was driving on the Clovis Highway near Shallowater. She said a truck that was about two cars in front of her was hauling a trailer when the hitch came undone.
According to Stanton, the car in front of her was hit first, causing that car to be damaged, before the hitch then hit her car. She was not injured but her car was damaged.
“You never think about hitting a trailer hitch, especially when there’s a trailer attached to the trailer hitch, you don’t think about them unhitching,” she said.
Now, she is very careful when it comes to hauling things on her vehicles.
“I haul horses, I rodeo, every time I take out my trailer out, I’m always checking and double checking that trailer hitch,” she said.
“If you see a trailer, give them plenty of room,” Stanton said “Especially if you have a hitch to your truck, make sure it’s secure, that’s really the only thing you can do, if it’s not secure, there’s really no telling where it could end up.”
