A new study released Monday by the Journal Cancer revealed that cervical cancer death rates are much higher than originally thought. Local Gynecologic Oncologist, Dr. Mark Reedy, says that he isn’t sure if this study has all the right information.
“They haven’t given me any definitions of what they are calling cervix cancer,” said Reedy.
Reedy says cervical cancer is caused by the virus Human Papillomavirus, which both men and women can contract. He says that HPV can also cause several other strains of cancer as well.
“There are fourteen types of HPV strains that can cause cancer,” said Reedy.
Even though Reedy says he disagrees with the study, he still wants both men and women to be aware of HPV. He says the best thing you can do is be preventative.
“The problem is nobody wants to talk about it. People contract the virus and then it’s too late. The vaccine works,” said Reedy.
