The Lubbouck County Commissioner approved the sale and activity of fireworks within the city’s limits earlier this month. Previously, New Year’s Eve and the 4th of July were the only available opportunities to shoot fireworks in the county. However, it is still illegal to spark fireworks within city limits.
To stay safe this weekend, the National Council of Fireworks recommends wearing protective eyewear during firework activity, always have adult supervision with minors, and never relight a “dud.” Instead, they said to wait twenty minutes to make sure the flame has gone and then soak it in a bucket of water.
“Always have a bucket of water on hand. Make sure before you do any fireworks near trash, that it’s completely extinguished, you know no hot spots,” West Carisle Volunteer Fire Department Captain Kevin Henricks said.
In the Texas Pyrotechnic Association, it stated you must be at least twelve years old to purchase fireworks and small rockets are specially prohibited.
“Of course, you don’t ever want to hold fireworks in your hand. You always want to shoot it away from any top of structures or dry grass especially is what we’re concerned about. But of course, if you do accidentally happen to start a fire, always call 911 before you try to do anything with it first,” Henricks said.
In the city of Lubbock, missles are still considered illegal fireworks.
