Family and neighbors are mourning the loss of Pablo ‘Popo’ Romero, 86. Romero died after his home caught on fire Monday night.
Granddaughter Angela Romero, said she and her family will miss their beloved grandfather.
The family writes on a Go Fund Me page: “the material items can be replaced, but my family lost everything.”
Neighbors like Rosie Rodriguez, said she called 911 when her son noticed the fire.
“We came outside and saw the flames in the kitchen, called 911, and tried banging on the door,” said Rodriguez. “All the neighbors were coming out.”
Neighbors tried to break down the doors and get inside, but it was too late.
When LFR arrived they found the 86-year-old victim and took him to the hospital where he later died. His dog was also found dead.
Lubbock Fire Rescue said the flames were accidentally caused by items being left on a stove.
“They are such a sweet family my heart goes out to them,” said Rodriguez. “I’m just heartbroken for them.”
The family said Romero and his pet Toby, died from smoke inhalation.
“We prayed with them which was really neat for neighbors to just come up and say a short prayer over them,” said Rodriguez. “I think that meant a lot to them.”
Angela and her family said they are very grateful for the outpour of support they’ve received from the Lubbock community.
The family has created a Go Fund Me page. Romero’s family who lived with him have been displaced from the home due to the fire damage.
