Although firefighters may be used to helping others daily, on some occasions, it’s them who needs a little help every now and then.

That was the case for Lt. Brett Assiter, with the Lubbock Fire Department, who on Thursday morning, woke up to find his truck missing from his driveway. Now, Assiter and his family have the truck back and keys in hand thanks to local law enforcement.

“Good news was there was a GPS unit on the truck that the person who borrowed the truck disabled, but it did show its last location before it was disabled and turns out it was right here,” said  Assiter, upon finding his truck abandoned in front of a home in Central Lubbock.

It was LPD and the Auto Theft Task Force who were able to locate the truck within less than 24 hours of it being reported missing.

While the truck appeared to have been ransacked, Assiter says nothing too valuable was taken. He says he realizes things could have been far worse without the support of his family and community members who tried to get the word out via social media, as well as the immediate help of his local law enforcement.

“This is what they [LPD, South Plains Auto Theft Task Force] do, they track these guys down. They’re all over it. From what I understand, the very very high percentage of vehicles that are stolen in Lubbock County are found in a very short time because these guys are really good at what they do.”

While the suspect has not yet been found, LPD says they do believe they have a person of interest.
