Dustin Garrett, local musician and band director at the Cactus Theater, said he’s excited ‘Lubbock Music NOW’ gives local artists the recognition they deserve.
“We have our own little Mecca of musicians here that need to be recognized for their accomplishments and things that they work on,” Garrett said. “It’s a way of life for them.”
Local non-profit Civic Lubbock announced they’ll be putting together ‘Lubbock Music NOW,’ a CD aimed to promote original music by Lubbock artists.
“There’s nothing greater than having songs that you’ve written, recognized by other people as great songs,” Garrett said.
Local musicians of any genre can submit tracks to be featured. If selected, along with exposure, they’ll win a $200 prize.
All songs submitted have to be an original and can either be a recording of a live performance or something that’s been professionally recorded in a studio.
“I urge musicians and songwriters and singers in this town to really dive in and find what defines their sound,” Garrett said. “What song really shows their capabilities as a musician.”
The deadline to submit is the end of April and the first edition of ‘Lubbock Music NOW’ will be released in October.
“This will be something that really, the whole world can listen to, our great Lubbock musicians and diversity here,” Garrett said.
