Those who lived through it will never forget the aftermath of September 11th, 2001. It has been 16 years since that day, but Lubbock residents still come together to honor those who lost their life and to celebrate the ones who protect our freedoms.

1,000 flags were placed in the shape of the Twin Towers in Kastman Park on September 8. For the last 15 years the City of Lubbock, Prosperity Bank and Lubbock ISD have teamed up to fill the park with American Flags in honor of September 11th.

Putting 1,000 flags out is no easy task, but 5th graders from Miller Elementary School get it done in under an hour. Assistant Principal, Kelli Archer, said putting out the flags is a right of passage.

“Many of them have seen this since they were in Pre-K as they’ve gone through the years at Miller,” Archer said. “They have such a sense of pride because all of our 5th graders are the ones that get to come out and actually put the flags up for our community.”

Teachers also take this opportunity to teach the children about the events on September 11th, in an age appropriate way.

“We talk about the events of 9/11 and the victims of 9/11 and this is an opportunity for them to put into context what they have learned and really the importance of our community heroes and the people who protect our freedoms,” Archer said.

The flag field will be on display at Kastman Park until September 14th.
