Lubbock County Commissioners on Monday will vote to possibly call for a $99.6 million bond issue. If so, voters would then be asked to approve the bonds in May.
The money would go toward road projects over the next 7 to 10 years. The money would be borrowed in stages and County Judge Curtis Parrish said there would be no rate hike on property taxes.
The plan is to dedicate the property tax money generated each year from new construction. Doing that, and spreading out the projects over time would ostensibly not require a rate hike.
“It’s not only looking at our needs immediately, but 20 or 25 years from now,” Parrish said.
The list of projects is set up as Tier 1, Tier 2 and Tier 3, with Tier 1 being the most urgent needs and the needs that actually get funded in the bond issue.
“This will not be done in secret. This will be done with voter approval,” Parrish said.
If approved, the projects include $21.6 million of improvements to Woodrow Road from County Road 2100 to FM 493 and another $17 million for Woodrow Road between Slide Road and County Road 2100.
It would also include $13.5 million for improvements to a section of FM 1294, and $8 million for improvements to a section of County Road 1500.
On January 28, commissioners approved a Lubbock County Transportation Improvement Plan which Parrish describes as a comprehensive plan. CLICK HERE to see it.
